Account: CHOIR, MUSIC ED & SOCIAL JUSTICE
Ask any student who has studied with Coty Raven Morris what love is, and they will respond, “Love is a verb.”
As the Assistant Professor of Choir, Music Education and Social Justice in the School of Music & Theater, Coty blends the power of empathy with the healing, energizing qualities of choir, creating transformative musical experiences for students and audiences alike, no matter their economic situation.
By donating to the Choir, Music Education and Social Justice Fund, you can help spread Coty's love of music throughout the community.
Morris brought her Being Human Together initiative, which strives to normalize difficult topics through communication, conversation, and outreach, to PSU in 2021. Nominated for a Grammy in 2023, Morris is educating the next generation of choir conductors and teachers, who will be equipped to spread that special blend of musical rigor, joy, and compassion to the children they go on to mentor in their professional lives.
Through their experiences in the classroom and in the community, students gain valuable music education experience while also fostering a deeper understanding of the issues faced by marginalized communities. Donations to this fund provide the program with much-needed resources to enable community outreach initiatives like the “Community Sings” program where students come together with Portland community members to share in the joy of singing. Your gift can also support the Being Human Together Youth Summit, where PSU music students and Portland high school students are brought together for a life-changing collaborative learning experience.
